A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), which involves incisions and shaping of the abdomen , is a cosmetic surgery procedure most often performed by women after pregnancy. Due to excess weight gained during pregnancy, the abdomen can sometimes fail to return to its previous shape, leading to sagging. Therefore, a tummy tuck is often preferred. While a tummy tuck involves the external abdominal area, the inner part of the abdomen is not entered, and only the sagging tissue is addressed.
After Abdominoplasty
We can list the events and what needs to be done after a tummy tuck surgery as follows…
The person can usually eat and walk 3-4 hours after surgery and is discharged the next day.
After a tummy tuck, patients are asked to wear a corset day and night for three weeks. After that, wearing it during the day is sufficient.
Post-operatively, patients are advised to sleep with their legs slightly drawn up, rather than lying flat in bed, due to the tension in their abdominal area. They can also sleep on their side. The bed does not have to be orthopedic.
Sudden contractions, heavy lifting, and sudden reflexive movements increase intra-abdominal pressure. This increased pressure can strain the stitches used to reinforce the abdominal wall. Therefore, these types of movements should be avoided.
Patients can bathe as soon as the bandages are removed. If a corset was used instead of a bandage, bathing the next day is safe. Bathing can be done while protecting the surgical area from harsh water impacts.
During a tummy tuck, regular internal sutures are used, while dissolvable external sutures are used. Creams are recommended for use starting the second week after surgery to minimize scarring. These creams may contain cortisone or silicone, depending on the patient’s condition. These should be used once or twice daily for two months.
Abdominal exercises are not recommended for the first six weeks after surgery, especially if the abdominal muscles have been treated. This can increase intra-abdominal pressure. Walking is particularly recommended after a tummy tuck.
The patient is specifically asked to walk.
Can it be performed together with liposuction?
Liposuction (fat removal) may also be performed in conjunction with this procedure. While a tummy tuck shapes the front and sides of the abdomen, the waistline, especially in overweight individuals, can remain prominent. Liposuction can shape the waistline to match the abdominal structure
