What are the Types of Breast Prostheses?

Breast tissue changes size due to genetic and hormonal factors, as well as weight gain and loss. Subsequent trauma or lesions may also cause the breast to become smaller than desired, or the breast may need to be removed entirely.

Breast implants provide a treatment option to restore breast tissue to its former state or desired size.

Thanks to the advancement of technology and the development of medical products, breast prostheses are produced in accordance with the natural breast tissue and are compatible with the body.

Breast implants can be classified according to their shape, content, and surface structure. Breast implant shapes can be chosen based on the body type or the preferences of patients seeking breast implant treatment.

Breast implants are used for breast augmentation, reshaping or reconstruction purposes.

The gel-like texture of the breast implants makes them extremely durable against potential damage and impacts, preventing them from breaking or becoming damaged. Types of breast implants:

  • Round
  • Anatomical
  • Silicon
  • Contains physiological serum
  • Rough
  • It is classified as having a smooth surface.

    Round-Shaped Breast Implant

Round breast implants, which resemble a sphere cut in half, are preferred by patients who want significant fullness, especially in the décolleté area.

A round breast implant makes the breast contours more visible and creates fullness in the middle part of the breast tissue.

People who use breast implants, especially for breast augmentation, generally prefer round breast implants because of the fuller appearance they provide.

    Anatomically Shaped Breast Prosthesis

Teardrop-shaped breast implants, also known as teardrop-shaped implants, are shaped more like a water drop, narrowing at the top and widening at the bottom. Unlike round implants, teardrop-shaped implants provide fullness in the lower breast area.

Breast implant shapes can be chosen depending on body shape and structure, breast tissue, and the patient’s wishes.

Textured and Smooth Surface Breast Implants

The outer surface of breast implants is covered with a special, hard silicone shell. A breast implant covered with a roughened shell adheres better to the breast tissue where it is placed. A roughened surface, which reduces the likelihood of implants integrating with the tissue and forming a capsule, is more frequently preferred than other types of breast implants.

Silicone and Physiological Serum Breast Prosthesis

Breast implants made with silicone filler are the most compatible implant type with natural breast tissue. Because it is the closest material to the human body, it is widely used in breast augmentation and reconstruction surgeries.

A physiological serum breast prosthesis is a type of prosthesis consisting of a silicone shell filled with sterile salt water, also called saline.

Since breast implants containing physiological saline are filled later during surgery, it is easier to adjust the implant volume and symmetry.

It has a harder feel than silicone-based breast implants.
